We made a survey regarding our research question with the purpose to see how much people know about how poverty affects people’s health care.
1° The first question of our survey was a basic one , we wanted to know if people knew the correct definition of poverty beacause if you understand it’s meaning then you are aware of the consequences it can cause.
We wrote 2 incorrect and incomplete answers and then the correct one, 78.6% of the people anwered correctly and 21.4% of the people chose one of the other two options as you can see in figure 1.
2° The second question was a bit tricky becasue we wanted to know if people knew which organizations of the following: United Nations, International Monetary Fund or the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, helps people that live in poor conditions. In fact, there were two correct answers, the UN and the OCDE.
40% of the people chose the OCDE, 33.3% chose the International Monetary Fund and just 26.7% chose the UN. We can tell that peopel might have thought that all asnwers were correct but decided to chose the one they thought helped the most. You can see these results in Figure 2.
3° The third question was an open one, we wanted to see if people are aware that poverty causes a negative effect on people’s health, the exact question was: Do you think poverty could affect people’s health? Why? answer briefly
All of the answers were yes, most of them expalined that poverty affects people’s health becasue they have low income so they are unable to buy great food or to have acces to a doctor or a hospital. Which is great because know we know that people everyone who answered the survey are actually aware of how poverty can affect really badly to someone’s health.
4° The fourth question was to see if the know which is the poorest country in the world, becasue if you know which counytry is the poorest then you’ll know were people lack most of great health becasue of they reasons we have already stated.
The options were: Nigeria, Burundi and Mozambique, the correct anwer was Nigeria, which 42.9% of the people chose. The rest of the peole chose either Burundi or Mozambique, even though they are poor countries they are not the poorest. You can see these results on Figure 3.
5° The fifth question was to see if they know aproximately how many people live in extreme poverty, this one was also a tricky one because some people tend to think the amount of peopel that live in poverty is extremly big, even though it is considerably big it is not that carzy. The options for the questions were: 736 milion, 53.5 million and 125 million. The best answer was 125 million which was the second most chosen answer, the most chosen answer was 736 million which is a lot, and almost nobody chose 53.5 million. You can confirm these results on Figure 4.
6° The sixth question was an open one. We asked them to write three characteristics about poverty. Most of the answers stated three main characteristics whcih were: Low income, lack of education, lack of health.
7° The seventh and final question was more like a request because we wanted to know if they knew abot any project that from any foundation or individual that helps poor people, specially on improving their acces to have a healthier life. All of them said no, expect from one who said: mostly of the U.N. organization such as UNDESA, UNDP and UNOCHA. About others that aren’t from the U.N. I only know the ODI and OXFAM.
The results of this last question only shos that people need to get more involved in these topics, beacause helping is the only way we can reduce poverty, we defenitely can not eradicate it but we can make a little change by helpin or supporting projects that are related to these topics.
